I really enjoyed reading Patrick's straight forward, gritty writing of his experiences, his journey to finding love at the centre of it all. I particularly liked the lack of pretence, the very real way of sharing his experiences. For me, real facilitates connection, and all the way through I felt close to him in on his journey. Consequently my journey reading the book was very emotional covering the range of horro, deep sadness as well as joy and happiness. A heart-felt and deeply inspiring book about Mr. Dougherty's courage and persistence to value life in all its teachings, with a generosity of spirit. A rich book about the importance of our inner journeys, written with brutal honesty and intensity, and compassionate insight, that, surprisingly, lovingly drew me into my own life.
Mr. Dougherty describes, through recounting numerous experiences of trauma, death, many searchings for meaning and deeper understanding, that, indeed, life is full of teachings and messages that can guide our lives in a "whole hearted embrace" where "love is the center of it all".
Mr. Dougherty's book is about his physical, emotional and spiritual experiences in his life, but I found myself being gently and perceptively pulled into exploring my own mind, body and spirit. His powerful storytelling ability and deft writing skills had me examining my own past clutter. As I read his story, I found my own story lightening up, as if I were de-cluttering my emotional and spiritual past, making room for my present and inviting more future possibilities of love and joy in.
I didn't read the last ten pages of this book for a week, not wanting it to end, as if I were ending my session with a wonderful teacher. However, Mr. Dougherty taught me it's not about him, but about my paying attention to my life's teachers. His book embraces the spirit of life, of living with love in the center of it all.
