I haven't really seen too many books with the stars as a direct inspiration for magical work, so I was curious to read this one. Firstly, I love the attention the author put on scholarship. I found out a lot of new ideas from this book! I also added significantly to my "to read" list based on the bibliography. The rituals themselves were also very beautiful. I would need to adapt a few for my own personal path, but that really isn't much of an issue since I typically look at this sort of book for inspiration, not a hard and fast "do this x way". I think if you are looking to incorporate the mythology behind some of our heavenly bodies in your workings, this book has a lot to offer

The Friendly Stars Martha Evans Martin 9781141030101 Books Reviews

I cannot speak for the kindle edition. I own an older paperback edition, the blue one, and it is one of my favorite astronomy books. I also recently downloaded a free pdf of the book, so look around if you want that version. It seems to show the Greek letters just fine, something someone complained about the kindle edition (but which may have been corrected.)

I own lots of astronomy books and several telescopes. They help me navigate around the sky, and probably contain more accurate information about distances. But this is the book that got me interested in astronomy in the first place. It starts, as every budding astronomer should, by pointing out the brightest stars and the constellations in which they lie. Many nights I would grab a sleeping bag and binoculars and just go outside, lay on the ground and enjoy the stars. There is something special about being able to point to one and know, "There is Rigel. and that one is Betelgeuse...."

Occasionally the writing gets a little flowery, literally. Take for example this passage from the chapter on Antares

"I am not sure that the color of Antares is
any reason why it should be associated with
the blooming of red flowers ; but I find in my
journal of out-door things that I have unconsciously
made the association. One entry,
on June 3oth, says "Antares is shining
splendidly to-night and rivals in color the
wild red lilies that were blooming to-day in
the coppice down beyond the spring."

I would definitely get a book version of this excellent book. The pdf version is nice to have, but nothing beats having the real thing. On my computer, a fairly recent laptop, pages are slow to load.
Great job
An easy and interesting read for anyone interested in astronomy. Good for beginners and experienced astronomers alike. Excellent addition to your library.
GREAT BOOK
This book is a real find. The star descriptions are dead-on, the map in the back is really handy, and Mrs. Martin's writing style is unparalleled. Even after 45 years of being an amateur astronomer, I found alot of new data on star brightness, star nomenclature & pronunciation, history & mythology of the constellations, and celestial mechanics. First published in 1907, this book is a real find and pleasurable reading too.
I found this book to be a most pleasant and enjoyable to read. A few things mentioned in the book are outdated but with a book as old as this one that is to be expected. The Friendly Stars is still an exceptional book of unaided eye astronomy and I wish I had this book when learning about the stars and constellations. I could see myself with this book outside on one of those clear nights Martha describes and finding my way around the starry heavens.
Though this book is a century old, the text is lively and engaging, and I very much enjoyed this story of getting to know the stars. Some of the science is inaccurate because of the huge gains in astronomical knowledge over the past 100 years. However much of this book is descriptive, much like a field guide, and remains completely relevant to this day. Unfortunately, the OCR digitization process created some problems with parts of the text (for instance, Greek letters are rendered as numbers) and several of the diagrams are incomplete or stretched across a page or two in-between blocks of text. Nevertheless, I can highly recommend this book if you're interested in getting to know the stars as your new nighttime friends!
